What's Out There, opening Friday, July 29, 6 - 8 p.m.

What's Out There is both a question and a statement. It is diametrically opposed to What's In There, "in" being the place where almost all human activity now resides, in our computers. The contemporary American landscape is increasingly becoming a digital phenomenon. Yet this exhibition, an examination of the analogue terrain around us, seeks to draw us away from our virtual habitats and lead us to otherworldly and surreal interpretations of natural environments that have been affected, for good or bad, by mankind.

The Wow Factor and Altered States opening saturday, July 2nd, 6 - 8

Herman Mhire, Altered States, opens Saturday, July 2nd, from 6 - 8 p.m.

Mhire's provocative and often disturbing hyperfaces are the result of a series of photographic portraits he took of more than thirty Louisiana artists. While preparing the digital files for printing, he began to manipulate the images, and a body of twisted, twirled and refracted portraits was born. The series of manipulations, both technical and aesthetic, have transformed the subjects into horrific, hilarious, stupefying and endearing characters.

Full Circle, Opening June 4th, 6 - 8 p.m.

Full Circle is a round up, of sorts. The title refers to the gallery returning to its original space in Water Mill after a two year hiatus on Shelter Island. Artists who have exhibited with the gallery in the past are brought together with a few dynamic newcomers. The unifying theme: the perfect shape. Fashion show by Alissa Smith of Smith, Southampton. Music, Food and Beverage.

Wild Abandon, September 4 - Oct. 4, 2010

Sara Nightingale Gallery is pleased to present Christian Little and Charles Ly, Wild Abandon, opening Saturday, Sept. 4, 6 - 8 p.m.

Both Christian Little and Charles Ly investigate connections between mythology and identity, drawing from ancient cultures and legends to develop their unique iconographies. Little's focus is the exuberance of youth. He masks his playful subjects in order to replace their individual egos with a sense of community and freedom. Ritual and ceremony drive the action: frog leaps, chicken fights, processions, running from the cops. Ly examines the Roman myth of Romulus and Remus, twin brothers abandoned in the forrest and raised by a she-wolf. The controversy surrounding this myth - many versions exist - provides an ambiguous narrative open to interpretation. Friends since high school, both Little and Ly are influenced by the contemporary Pop Surrealism movement, sometimes called "The Juxtapoz Factor". Like this subculture of young, DIY illustrators and artists working today, they are creating figurative, narrative works in which the central characters are usually an anthropomorphic synthesis of fictional and existing creatures. Their sensibility includes psychedelia, graphic design, anime, and an admiration for kitsch and low-brow culture.
